Yahoo Finance smart home integration, free and open source

Stock, index, ETF, currency and crypto prices in Gladys, from Yahoo Finance.
Follow prices in Gladys: shares, indices (CAC 40, S&P 500…), ETFs, currency pairs (EUR/USD…) and cryptocurrencies (BTC-EUR…), read from the public pages of Yahoo Finance. No account, no API key.
Prices are delayed (often by 15 minutes, depending on the exchange) and indicative: this integration is for keeping an eye on the markets from your home, not for trading. Not affiliated with Yahoo.
What you get
- One device per symbol, named after the instrument (
CAC 40 (^FCHI)): price, change today (in value and in percent), previous close, currency and state of the market (open or closed), with their history. - A dashboard widget listing the followed symbols with their price and change today, green up, red down.
- Two scene triggers: a price alert crossed (
AIR.PA > 200), and a big move of the day (1, 2, 3, 5 or 10 %, up or down). - Two scene actions: read the price of one symbol, or of every followed symbol, as a sentence to send by message or have it read aloud.
Requirements
- Gladys Assistant 5.1 or later.
- Internet access from the Gladys host (the integration reads
query1.finance.yahoo.com).
Configuration
Settings
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Symbols | Yahoo Finance symbols separated by commas, 20 at most. By default: ^FCHI, EURUSD=X, BTC-EUR. |
| Price alerts | For the "price alert" trigger, separated by semicolons: AIR.PA > 200; BTC-EUR < 50000 (decimal comma accepted). |
| Refresh interval | 5 to 60 minutes (10 by default) while the market is open. |
| Language | Names of the features (at their creation) and texts sent to the scenes. French by default. |
Save, then open the Discover tab of the integration and create the devices you want. A symbol added later appears there after the next reading.
The Show the current prices button of the configuration reads every symbol at once and says which ones Yahoo does not know.
Finding a symbol
Search the name on finance.yahoo.com: the symbol is shown next to it. A few examples:
| Kind | Symbols |
|---|---|
| Shares | AIR.PA (Airbus, Paris), SAP.DE (SAP, Xetra), AAPL (Apple, Nasdaq) |
| Indices | ^FCHI (CAC 40), ^GDAXI (DAX), ^IBEX (IBEX 35), ^GSPC (S&P 500) |
| ETFs | CW8.PA (Amundi MSCI World), IWDA.AS (iShares Core MSCI World) |
| Currency pairs | EURUSD=X (one euro in dollars), EURGBP=X, EURCHF=X |
| Cryptocurrencies | BTC-EUR, ETH-EUR, BTC-USD |
London shares are quoted in pence (GBp): the price feature then has no unit, and the currency feature says
GBp.
Devices
| Feature | Content |
|---|---|
| Price | Last price, in euros, dollars or pounds when the currency is one of them. |
| Change today | Price minus the previous close. |
| Change today (%) | The same, in percent. |
| Previous close | The reference of the change. For a cryptocurrency, the price at 00:00 UTC. |
| Currency | The currency code given by Yahoo (EUR, USD, GBp, JPY…). |
| Market | Open or Closed. A currency pair trades 24 hours a day on weekdays, a cryptocurrency always. |
The names of the features are frozen when the device is created: change the language before creating it.
Dashboard widget
Stock prices lists the followed symbols (8 at most) in the order of the configuration: the instrument, its price and the state of the market, and the change today as a coloured badge. Tap a row to see the symbol, the previous close, the change and the time of the price, with a link to Yahoo Finance.
Scene triggers
Stock market: price alert — a price alert of the configuration is crossed. Filters: the symbol (a device) and the direction (rises above, falls below). It fires once, then again only after the price came back past the threshold by 0.5 %: a price hovering around the threshold does not flood your phone. An alert already crossed when you save it fires nothing until it is crossed again.
Stock market: big daily move — the change since the previous close reaches the chosen level: 1, 2, 3, 5 or 10 %, up or down. Once per level and per session. Filters: the symbol, the direction and the level.
Both pass to the actions: the symbol, the name of the instrument, the price, the currency, the threshold or level, the direction and a ready-made sentence. What was already fired is kept, so a restart fires nothing twice.
Scene actions
Stock market: read a price — choose a symbol; the action gives a sentence ("CAC 40: €7,934.70 (+0.78% today)"), the price, the change in percent and the currency.
Stock market: read all prices — every followed symbol in one text, and their number.
Both read Yahoo again when the last reading is older than the refresh interval.
Scene examples
- Morning summary: at 9:30 on weekdays, read all prices then send the text by Telegram.
- Target reached: with the alert
AIR.PA > 200, on price alert for Airbus, send "{{text}}" to your phone. - Crypto storm: on big daily move for BTC-EUR, down, 10 %, make the living room lamp blink red.
Data source, terms and limits of use
The integration reads the public "chart" endpoint of Yahoo Finance, one request per symbol, spaced out:
- while a market is open, at every refresh interval;
- while it is closed, every 30 minutes (its price does not move);
- an unknown symbol, every 6 hours.
This access is unofficial: Yahoo publishes no API for it and may change or refuse it at any time. When Yahoo refuses the requests (HTTP 429), the integration waits twice the interval, then longer at each new refusal, up to one hour. The data is for personal use, under the terms of service of Yahoo: prices delayed and indicative, not for trading.
Troubleshooting
- No device in the Discover tab: check the symbols, then use Show the current prices: it lists those Yahoo does not know. The status of the integration says it too.
- "Yahoo Finance refuses the requests for now": wait; the readings resume by themselves. Lower the number of symbols or raise the refresh interval if it comes back often.
- The market stays "Closed" during the session: the exchange may be on a holiday, or the instrument has not traded yet today.
- A price alert does not fire: the symbol must also be in the list of symbols, and the alert must be crossed after you saved it.
- Logs:
LOG_LEVEL=debugshows each reading.
Limits
- Delayed and indicative prices; no history imported (the history starts when the device is created).
- One price per symbol: no portfolio quantities or value.
- 20 symbols at most.
- The change of a cryptocurrency is counted from 00:00 UTC, not over 24 hours.
- On the first day of a symbol, a move already there at the first reading of the session fires nothing.
- Unofficial access to Yahoo: it may stop working without notice.
Configuration settings
These are the settings Yahoo Finance asks for in its configuration screen in Gladys.
| Setting | Type | Required | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| Followed symbols | section | No | List the Yahoo Finance symbols to follow, save, then create their devices in the Discover tab. Find a symbol with the search of finance.yahoo.com: it is shown next to the name. |
| Sources and limits | section | No | Public pages of Yahoo Finance, read without an account. Prices are delayed (often 15 minutes) and indicative: not for trading. Unofficial access, which Yahoo may change or refuse. Not affiliated with Yahoo. |
| Symbols | string | No | Separated by commas, 20 at most: AIR.PA (Airbus in Paris), ^FCHI (CAC 40), CW8.PA (an ETF), EURUSD=X (euro in dollars), BTC-EUR (bitcoin in euros). |
| Price alerts | string | No | For the "price alert" scene trigger, separated by semicolons: a followed symbol, > or <, a price in its currency. Fires once, again after the price came back. |
| Refresh interval | select | No | While the market is open. A closed market is read every 30 minutes. Yahoo prices are delayed anyway: no need to go faster. |
| Language of the texts | select | No | Names of the features (at their creation) and texts sent to the scenes. |
How to install Yahoo Finance in Gladys
- In Gladys, open Integrations: Yahoo Finance appears in the catalog, next to the native integrations, with a community badge.
- Click Install. Gladys pulls the Docker image (
ghcr.io/guim31/gladys-bourse:1.0.0), starts it in a sandbox isolated from the core, and generates the integration's interface (devices, discovery and configuration). - Open the Configuration screen of the integration, fill in the settings, and save.
- You can also install it directly from its repository URL: https://github.com/guim31/gladys-bourse.
Yahoo Finance requires Gladys >=5.1.0. The catalog inside Gladys refreshes every hour, so a new version becomes available at most one hour after its release.
Not running Gladys yet? It is free and open source: follow the installation guide to get started.
About external integrations
Yahoo Finance is an external integration: a community integration packaged as a Docker container and published on GitHub, that Gladys installs in one click and runs in a sandbox isolated from its core. It is published and maintained by guim31, not by the Gladys core team.
