RecycleApp smart home integration, free and open source

RecycleApp integration for Gladys Assistant

Belgian waste collection calendar (RecycleApp): reminders, scenes and dashboard widget.

This integration reads the waste collection calendar that RecycleApp (Fost Plus) publishes for a Belgian address, and makes it usable in Gladys: devices, scenes and a dashboard widget.

No account, no key: the integration calls the same public API as the recycleapp.be website. It only needs Internet access (cloud badge).

Installation

  1. Install RecycleApp from the Gladys integration catalog (Gladys 5.1 or later).
  2. In Configuration, fill in:
    • Zip code: for example 5000;
    • Street: the street name in French, Dutch or German, as RecycleApp writes it (case and accents do not matter);
    • House number.
  3. Press Test the connection: the answer gives the address found, the waste types and the next collection.
  4. In the Discovery tab, add the devices you want.

Cannot find your street? Use Find my street: type part of the name (for example fer), the answer lists the streets RecycleApp knows in your zip code. Copy the right name into the Street field.

Some municipalities (Brussels-Capital in particular) do not publish their calendar on RecycleApp. If Test the connection finds no collection, check on recycleapp.be that your address has a calendar there.

Settings

SettingDefaultWhat it does
Language of the waste typesFrenchLanguage of the device names, their states and the scene variables (fr, nl, de, en).
Reminder time (the evening before)19:00Belgian time of the "Waste collection tomorrow" trigger.
Time of the collection-day trigger07:00Belgian time of the "Waste collection today" trigger.
Days read ahead60How far ahead the calendar is read (7 to 365 days).
Refresh interval (h)12Hours between two reads of RecycleApp (1 to 48).

Times are written 19:00, 19h00 or 7:00.

Devices

  • Next waste collection (summary):
    • Days until the collection: 0 = today, 1 = tomorrow…;
    • Collection day: for example "Friday 23 October";
    • Waste collected: for example "PMD and Paper-cardboard".
  • PMD collection, Paper-cardboard collection… (one per waste type):
    • Days until the collection;
    • Collection day.

A waste type with no collection in the window read (Christmas trees in summer) shows -1 and "No collection planned".

The values change at midnight (Belgian time). When RecycleApp stops answering, the last calendar read is still used: the cloud badge turns degraded (orange dot) and tells the date of the last read.

Triggers

TriggerWhenVariables
Waste collection tomorrowThe evening before, at the reminder time, once for the dayfractions, count, date
A given waste type is collected tomorrowThe evening before, at the reminder time, for that typefraction, date
Waste collection todayIn the morning, at the time set, once for the dayfractions, count, date

Example: "Waste collection tomorrow" → send a message Tomorrow: {{triggerEvent.data.fractions}}, put the bins out!

Each trigger fires once a day, even after a restart. When Gladys or the integration restarts after the time set, the trigger still fires, up to 4 hours later.

Actions

  • Get the next waste collection: for one waste type (or any when the field is empty), returns found, days (-1 when none), date (YYYY-MM-DD) and fractions, for the following actions and conditions.
  • Read the waste calendar again: asks RecycleApp now and returns collections, next_date and next_fractions.

Dashboard widget

The Waste collections widget shows the next collection, the following ones with their RecycleApp logo and the days left, the address and the date of the last read. The Refresh button reads the calendar again. Setting: how many collections are shown (1 to 8). Waste types are named in each user's language when RecycleApp has it.

Troubleshooting

  • "RecycleApp does not know the zip code": check the zip code.
  • "No street …" or "Several streets match": use Find my street and copy the exact name.
  • No collection: check the house number, or whether your municipality publishes its calendar on RecycleApp.
  • "RecycleApp could not be read": RecycleApp or the Internet does not answer. The integration retries every 15 minutes and keeps the last calendar.

The calendar read and the triggers already sent are kept in /data, the only folder the container can write to.

Configuration settings

These are the settings RecycleApp asks for in its configuration screen in Gladys.

SettingTypeRequiredDescription
Getting startedsectionNoThe integration reads the waste collection calendar RecycleApp (Fost Plus) publishes for a Belgian address: no account, no key. Type your address as on recycleapp.be, then press "Test the connection". One device per waste type, plus the next collection, appear in the Discovery tab.
Zip codestringYes
StreetstringYesThe street name in French, Dutch or German, as RecycleApp writes it. Not sure? "Find my street" lists the streets of your zip code.
House numberstringYes
Language of the waste typesselectNoThe language the waste types are named in: device names, device states and scene variables. The dashboard widget follows the language of each user.
Reminder time (the evening before)stringNoWhen the "Collection tomorrow" scene trigger fires, Belgian time, HH:MM.
Time of the collection-day triggerstringNoWhen the "Collection today" scene trigger fires, Belgian time, HH:MM.
Days read aheadnumberNoHow far ahead the calendar is read, in days. A waste type with no collection in that window shows -1.
Refresh interval (h)numberNoHours between two reads of RecycleApp. A calendar changes a few times a year: 12 hours is plenty.

How to install RecycleApp in Gladys

  1. In Gladys, open Integrations: RecycleApp appears in the catalog, next to the native integrations, with a community badge.
  2. Click Install. Gladys pulls the Docker image (ghcr.io/prohand/gladys-recycleapp:1.0.1), starts it in a sandbox isolated from the core, and generates the integration's interface (devices, discovery and configuration).
  3. Open the Configuration screen of the integration, fill in the settings, and save.
  4. You can also install it directly from its repository URL: https://github.com/prohand/gladys-recycleapp.

RecycleApp requires Gladys >=5.1.0. The catalog inside Gladys refreshes every hour, so a new version becomes available at most one hour after its release.

Not running Gladys yet? It is free and open source: follow the installation guide to get started.

About external integrations

RecycleApp is an external integration: a community integration packaged as a Docker container and published on GitHub, that Gladys installs in one click and runs in a sandbox isolated from its core. It is published and maintained by prohand, not by the Gladys core team.
