Met Éireann smart home integration, free and open source

Forecasts and official weather warnings for Ireland, from Met Éireann open data. No API key.
The weather of Ireland in Gladys, from Met Éireann, the Irish national meteorological service: its forecasts (the HARMONIE model around Ireland, then ECMWF up to 10 days) and its official weather warnings, county by county. Open data: no account, no API key.

What you get
- The Gladys weather widget and the chat assistant use Met Éireann: the current weather (temperature, humidity, pressure, dew point, wind and gusts, cloud cover, sunrise and sunset), the next 24 hours with the rain of each hour and its probability, and the next 8 days. Day and night have their own icons. Everything is shown in °C, m/s and mm or in °F, mph and inches, following the unit system of each Gladys user.
- The Met Éireann warnings of your county (yellow, orange, red: wind, rain, snow and ice, thunderstorms, fog, low or high temperature, coastal), shown as alerts on the weather widget, in force or announced. The built-in weather alert scene trigger of Gladys works with them, and fires within a minute of a change.
- Scene trigger "Met Éireann warning changed": a warning issued, upgraded, downgraded, updated or lifted, with its colour and a sentence in your language.
- Scene trigger "Rain or snow expected within the hour".
- Scene action "Get the precipitation of the next hour".
- Scene action "Get the forecast of the day" (today or tomorrow).
- Scene action "Get the Met Éireann warnings": the highest level for your county, to gate a scene on it.
No extra widget: the Gladys weather widget already shows the forecast and the warnings.
Ireland only. Met Éireann's models cover Ireland, Northern Ireland and the nearby seas; elsewhere there is no forecast and Gladys uses another weather provider. The warnings cover the 26 counties of the Republic of Ireland (Northern Ireland is covered by the Met Office). For a worldwide forecast, install MET Norway instead: it covers Ireland too, but without the Irish warnings.
Installation
- Check that your house has a location in Gladys: Settings → Houses, then the address or the position on the map. The integration refreshes the weather of every house that has one.
- Install Met Éireann from the integration store (or Integrations →
Install from GitHub with the address
https://github.com/guim31/gladys-met-eireann). Gladys asks you to allow access to the location of your houses: it finds their county and watches the rain of the next hour. - Open the Configuration tab and click Test Met Éireann. The answer shows the current temperature of your first house and the warnings of its county.
That's it: the weather widget of your dashboard now shows Met Éireann. If another weather integration is installed, pick the provider in the settings of the weather widget.
Gladys 5.2 or later is required.
Configuration
Nothing is mandatory.
- County of the warnings — Automatic finds the county of each house from its location (the nearest of about 200 Irish towns and villages). Choose your county yourself if your house is near a county border and the warnings shown are not yours. The choice applies to all your houses.
- Units of the scene values — the units of the temperatures, wind and precipitation the integration puts in scene variables. Automatic follows the unit system of the last user who looked at the weather; pick Metric or US to set it. The weather widget always follows each user's own preference.
- Language of the scene texts — the language of the sentences the integration puts in scene variables ("Orange wind warning issued for Kerry…"): English, French, German or Spanish. French by default; Automatic follows the language of your Gladys. The texts of Met Éireann itself (headline, details) are in English.
Refresh rate and Met Éireann's terms
Met Éireann publishes its data openly and asks for a fair use of it. The integration:
- refreshes about every 30 minutes, plus a few random minutes so that every Gladys does not call at the same second (the models run every 3 to 6 hours);
- makes one forecast call per house (houses at the same place share it) and one warning call for all of them, which feed everything: the dashboard, the chat and the scenes. Opening the dashboard costs nothing: Gladys is served from the forecast in memory;
- sends coordinates rounded to 4 decimals (about 10 m) and an identification
of the application
(
gladys-met-eireann/<version> github.com/guim31/gladys-met-eireann); - pauses if Met Éireann asks to slow down (error 429) or refuses the requests (error 403).
During an outage, the last forecast stays visible for 3 hours at most.
Scenes
The integration adds its cards to the scene editor, in the Integrations category. The House field lists your houses.
Met Éireann warning changed
Trigger: starts the scene when a warning for the county of a house is issued, upgraded (yellow → orange…), downgraded, updated (same level, new text or times) or lifted (cancelled or ended). It never fires on the first reading after a restart, nor when Met Éireann cannot be reached.
Optional filters (empty: everything matches):
- House;
- Change: issued, upgraded, downgraded, updated, lifted or ended;
- Level: yellow, orange, red;
- Phenomenon: wind, rain, snow and ice, thunderstorm, fog, low temperature, high temperature, coastal, flood, other.
Variables for the next actions: the house, the county, the change (issued,
upgraded, downgraded, updated, lifted), the level (yellow,
orange, red), the phenomenon (wind, rain, snow…), the headline and
the details of Met Éireann (in English), and a summary ready to send, for
example: "Orange wind warning issued for Kerry, from Sat 24 Oct, 14:00 to
Sun 25 Oct, 09:00."
Rain or snow expected within the hour
Trigger: starts the scene when the hourly forecast shows precipitation this hour or the next one, where the previous refresh showed none. It fires once per event, at most once an hour per house, and never on the first refresh after a restart.
Optional filters (empty: everything matches):
- House;
- Precipitation: rain, sleet or snow;
- Intensity: light, moderate or heavy.
Variables for the next actions: the name of the house, the kind of
precipitation (rain, sleet, snow), the intensity (light,
moderate, heavy), whether there is thunder, the minutes until it starts
(0 if it is already falling), the amount expected that hour, its probability
and a summary ready to send, for example: "Light rain expected in 35
minutes (60% chance)."
Get the precipitation of the next hour
Action: tells the scene whether rain or snow is coming within the hour (Precipitation expected: yes or no), when, what, how hard, and the same summary. Leave House empty for your first house that has a location. If no hourly forecast covers the hour, Forecast available is no: do not read it as dry.
Get the forecast of the day
Action: reads the forecast of today (the rest of the day) or tomorrow for a house, and returns:
- the sky, as a Gladys code (
clear,partly-cloudy,rain,snow…) and in words ("Rain"); - the minimum and maximum temperatures;
- the precipitation of the day and its highest probability;
- the strongest wind and the strongest gust;
- a summary, for example: "Tomorrow: rain, 8 to 14 °C, 5.2 mm of precipitation (70% chance)."
Get the Met Éireann warnings
Action: reads the warnings of the county of a house, in force or announced,
and returns the county, whether there is at least one warning, how many, the
highest level (none, yellow, orange, red), whether a warning is
in effect now, the phenomenon and the headline of the highest one, and a
summary, for example: "2 Met Éireann warnings for Galway: Orange wind
warning, from Sat 24 Oct, 14:00 to Sun 25 Oct, 09:00; …". If Met Éireann
cannot be reached, or the house is outside the counties of the Republic,
Warnings available is no.
Scene examples
- Storm coming: trigger "Met Éireann warning changed", level orange or red, change issued or upgraded, then a notification with the summary and the shutters closed.
- Bring the washing in: trigger "Rain or snow expected within the hour", then a notification with the summary variable.
- Morning weather: at 7:00, action "Get the forecast of the day" (today), then "Get the Met Éireann warnings", then a message with both summaries.
- Garden watering: every evening, action "Get the forecast of the day" (tomorrow), then a condition on Precipitation to water only when less than 2 mm is expected.
Limits
- Developed without a Gladys running in Ireland: the integration is tested against real answers of Met Éireann (Dublin, Cork, Galway, and the warnings of Storm Boelo, October 2026). Feedback welcome.
- Ireland and its surroundings only (see above).
- The county is guessed from the nearest town: near a border, choose it in the configuration.
- Warnings in English: Met Éireann publishes them in English only; the integration translates the level, the phenomenon and the change, not the details.
- Land warnings only: the marine and small craft warnings are not included.
- The hour is the finest step, for about 3 days; then every 3 hours, then every 6 hours up to about 10 days.
- No feels-like temperature, UV index or visibility: the open forecast does not give them.
- Today only holds the hours still to come.
- The days are cut in the time zone of Gladys, for every house.
- The integration needs Gladys 5.2 or later.
Troubleshooting
- "No house of Gladys has a location" — set the location of your house in Settings → Houses.
- "Met Éireann has no usable forecast for the location of your house" — the house is outside the area of Met Éireann (far from Ireland), or its location is wrong: check it in Settings → Houses.
- "Met Éireann asks to slow down" — too many requests from your Internet connection: the integration waits and retries by itself.
- "Met Éireann refuses the requests (HTTP 403)" — update the integration.
- "Met Éireann is unreachable for now" — Gladys cannot reach
openaccess.pf.api.met.ieorwww.met.ie: check its Internet access. The integration retries after 5 minutes, then less and less often. - The warnings are not those of my county — choose your county in the configuration.
- The dashboard still shows another provider — open the settings of the weather widget and pick Met Éireann.
- Logs: the Logs tab of the integration (or
docker logson the host) shows the start, each warning change, the problems and the return of Met Éireann, once each. Start the container withLOG_LEVEL=debugto see every refresh.
Privacy
The coordinates of your houses, rounded to about 10 m, are sent to Met Éireann to get their forecast, and nowhere else. The warning list is the same for everyone: its request carries no location. No account, no key, nothing is written to disk.

How to install Met Éireann in Gladys
- In Gladys, open Integrations: Met Éireann appears in the catalog, next to the native integrations, with a community badge.
- Click Install. Gladys pulls the Docker image (
ghcr.io/guim31/gladys-met-eireann:1.0.0), starts it in a sandbox isolated from the core, and generates the integration's interface (devices, discovery and configuration). - Open the Configuration screen of the integration, fill in the settings, and save.
- You can also install it directly from its repository URL: https://github.com/guim31/gladys-met-eireann.
Met Éireann requires Gladys >=5.2.0. The catalog inside Gladys refreshes every hour, so a new version becomes available at most one hour after its release.
Not running Gladys yet? It is free and open source: follow the installation guide to get started.
About external integrations
Met Éireann is an external integration: a community integration packaged as a Docker container and published on GitHub, that Gladys installs in one click and runs in a sandbox isolated from its core. It is published and maintained by guim31, not by the Gladys core team.
