Environment Canada-Integration für Gladys Assistant

Official Environment Canada weather: alerts, air quality (AQHI), humidex and wind chill.

Info

Die Dokumentation dieser Integration wird von ihrem Autor geschrieben und ist bisher nur auf Englisch verfügbar.

This integration makes Environment and Climate Change Canada the weather provider of Gladys. The dashboard weather widget and the assistant ("what will the weather be like tomorrow?") use its official forecasts. It adds what you need in Canada: the official alerts, the Air Quality Health Index (wildfire smoke included), the humidex in summer, the wind chill in winter and the precipitation radar.

Nothing to enter, no account, no key: everything comes from the open services of the Meteorological Service of Canada, for the location of your house. Canada only.

Installation

  1. Install the integration from the Gladys catalog (Gladys 5.1 or newer).
  2. Accept the access to the location of your houses: the weather is the one of the house, nothing else to enter.
  3. Check that your house is placed on the map (Settings → Houses). Without a location, there is no weather.
  4. In the Configuration screen, click Test Environment Canada: the message says what each source answered (forecasts, alerts, air quality).

Once installed, the integration takes precedence over the OpenWeather service built into Gladys. The weather widget can also pick it explicitly.

Where the weather comes from

The forecasts are those of the Environment Canada city page nearest to your house (the same as on weather.gc.ca): current conditions measured at the station of the city, 24 hours of hourly forecasts and about 6 days. The "Feels like" widget names the city used.

Configuration

  • Official alerts (on by default) — Environment Canada warnings, watches, advisories and statements covering your house, special air quality and smoke statements included. They show in the weather widget and feed the "Weather alert" scene trigger of Gladys. When an alert appears, changes level or ends, the integration tells Gladys within minutes instead of waiting for its 30-minute check.
  • Air quality alerts (off by default) — adds an alert when the Air Quality Health Index of your area reaches a high risk (7 or more). Not an official alert: it comes from the index itself.
  • Feels-like alerts (estimates) (off by default) — adds an alert when the computed humidex or wind chill reaches a real risk (great discomfort, high risk of frostbite…). They are not official alerts.
  • Precipitation radar (on by default) — a 300 × 200 km radar image centered on your house. Turn on the "provider images" option of the weather widget to see it.

The "Air quality" widget

The Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) of Health Canada and Environment Canada runs from 1 to 10+. It combines ozone, fine particles and nitrogen dioxide. The widget shows:

  • the index now and its risk level, on a gauge;
  • the peak of the next 24 hours and the hour-by-hour forecast;
  • the forecast by period (tonight, tomorrow…);
  • in wildfire season, the index expected in the smoke, when Environment Canada publishes one;
  • the official advice, for everyone and for the people at risk (heart or lung conditions, children, older adults).

The index is the one of the nearest community (about 130 in Canada), 75 km away at most. Some communities have a forecast but no measurement (Montréal and Québec City, whose air is measured by the province): the index of the current hour is then the forecast one, and the widget says so.

The "Feels like" widget

It shows:

  • the index that applies now: humidex from 20 °C, else wind chill, with its risk level on the Environment Canada scales;
  • the temperature and, in winter, the wind chill in the gusts (in summer, the dew point);
  • the feels-like and the temperature of the next 24 hours, with the worst hour;
  • the time to frostbite of exposed skin, the muggy night (night dew point of 18 °C or more), the black ice risk (freezing rain, freezing fog or precipitation around 0 °C) and the 3-hour pressure trend.

The feels-like levels

Scenes

Two triggers, checked every 5 minutes:

  • Air quality level changed — the Air Quality Health Index of a house reaches a new risk level.
  • Feels-like level changed — the humidex or the wind chill of a house reaches a new level.

Filters, all optional:

  • Level reached — e.g. "High risk". The scene fires even when the index jumps over this level (from "low" to "very high").
  • Direction — "Getting worse" or "Getting better".
  • House — the exact name of the house in Gladys (empty = all).

The next actions can read {{triggerEvent.data.summary}} (a sentence ready to send), {{triggerEvent.data.value}}, {{triggerEvent.data.current_level}}, etc.

Examples: close the windows and turn off the air exchanger when the air quality reaches "High risk" (wildfire smoke); close the blinds and start the air conditioning at "Great discomfort"; turn on the block heater or send a notification at "High cold risk".

To avoid bursts, a level is only left with a margin of one unit, and the first evaluation after a start fires nothing.

Good to know

  • Outside Canada: Environment Canada has no weather for your house; the integration says so in the Configuration screen.
  • The Environment Canada hourly forecasts give no precipitation amount, only a probability.
  • When Environment Canada does not answer, the last known weather stays shown for up to 3 hours.
  • The data is cached 10 minutes (5 for the alerts, 15 for the air quality).

Sources and licences

Data: Environment and Climate Change Canada (city page forecasts, alerts, Air Quality Health Index, radar), under the ECCC Data Servers End-use Licence. Radar base map: Natural Resources Canada, under the Open Government Licence – Canada. The AQHI advice is Health Canada's, sometimes shortened. This integration is neither affiliated with nor endorsed by the Government of Canada.

So installierst du Environment Canada in Gladys
